What are the regs for running supply from pole to house underground or on the surface?

The service conductors would have to be either underground or overhead. I'm not sure what you mean by "on the surface".

The wiring methods are covered in 6-300 for underground services, and 6-302 for overhead.

The general rules that apply to all underground installations, such as burial depth, mechanical protection, etc, are covered in 12-012.

Post again if you have any specific questions.

    Thanks Ed,

I dont have a copy of the code so if you could elaborate that would be great. We are planning to build in 3-4 years so at this point I am just trying to formulate our plan. The house will be approx 1500ft from the poles at roadside. What kind of trench am I looking at? What do you think of underground vs pole service?

    Thanks

Where will the Power Co. transformer be located, at the roadside?

It would be less expensive to pay the PoCo to run the high voltage poleline closer to the house, if that is possible. That is what is normally done here (PEI).

It would be very costly to run 120/240 volt, 100 amp, service conductors 1500 ft.
